I'm warning you now, this post is about poop. If you're feeling delicate, skip over this one.
I'm one of the people that raised her hand on 'odd things about running' day about being afraid of having to poop during the marathon. This fear is because every morning I have to go during my run. Sometimes I make it, sometimes I don't. This is getting very frustrating. I usually get up and head right out (because of time restrictions) and I really don't want to have to wait around for a while or get up even earlier, but clearly something has to change. Is anyone else having this trouble???

Mary,
This is my greatest fear! I used to go for several days (most of my adult life) without pooping (great word) before I started exercising and eating right. I even took Zelnorm and had to take laxatives. Now it is once or twice a day. When it hits me I cannot wait until a convenient time. I always try to wait until after it hits to run but my body has a mind of its own! The only way I have been able to solve my dilemna is to get up earlier, relax & drink coffee. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I am really worried about Chicago, but by then maybe I will have more control of the situation.
hang in there! See you Saturday.
Thanks, Mary, for being brave to bring this up.. I have been struggling with this very issue and have about decided that I will have to get up and get on the treadmill at the hotel in Chicago and put in an extra mile before the Marathon starts so I can use the bathroom at the hotel before hitting the start line.
Talk about regular! Almost without fail, within 10-15 minutes after starting walking, I'll need to take a break. I've had to change my walk pattern to be back at the house after the first mile, take a break and then go back out and finish my walk.
It's frustrating. I am trying to figure out how to "program" my body like Mark said ... I guess actually I need to "reprogram" because right now, it's programmed to go after walking for 10 minutes or so. If I could just get the urge as I put on my shoes or something like that! I have no clue on how to change this habit!
You are awesome for having the courage to bring this up. I had that problem for a while, but I realized that I was rushing too much to get out the door to exercise and I didn't allow myself the time to make "it" happen first thing. So now I get up earlier, then I make myself a nice hot cup of tea, and I sit on the throne nice and relaxed and I wait for the magic. It usually works for me. Good luck!
I couldn't help myself, I had to laugh when I first read your blog this morning. Thanks for bringing this up. I usually walk in the afternoon, so I haven't had this problem. I guess you'll have to use the "potty training" method to get your body used to it. Just get up a bit earlier and sit there. and try to make it happen. Ok, so it's probably easier with a child, since they seem to go all the time (ask me, I buy diapers for twins, ouch!) but eventually your body will get the hint.
got pictures of your vacation?
So, I hope you have learned that you are not alone...oh the joys of running! I second the suggestions of a little hot tea or coffee and getting up a little earlier so that you can get things "moving". You'll have it "worked out" by Chicago, I promise. And in the event that you do have to go during the marathon - there are port-a-potties and you will not mind using them at that point.
LOL! Kudoos for the courage and what great tips!
